Vistamatic will be exhibiting at the 5th Design in Mental Health Conference & Exhibition on the 16th-17th May at The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham.
Design in Mental Health is the definitive event for the built environment in mental healthcare. The event brings together a unique audience of NHS and private healthcare professionals, contractors, architects and clinicians focused on creating therapeutic environments in mental health facilities.
The event consists of the Design in Mental Health Network’s annual conference, awards dinner and an exhibition that showcases the latest product innovations designed to enhance mental health environments.
Design in Mental Health brings together everyone involved in delivering therapeutic environments, now and for the future. Its success is built on three key elements:
- The Exhibition is a unique marketplace where manufacturers and providers can meet decision-makers and specifiers, make new contacts, generate leads and new product ideas, and identify current and emerging opportunities in the mental health sector
- This year’s Conference will feature over 40 speakers, with specialist content. It’s the professional gathering for everyone concerned with the built environment in mental health
- The conversations between architects, contractors, mental health providers and service users, each bringing their unique insights and perspectives to creating effective therapeutic environments.

Vistamatic SUREview Vision Panel
The SUREview by Vistamatic is the discreet and safe vision panel and bead designed exclusively for the Symphony Doorset.
The new SUREview anti-ligature vision panel from Vistamatic® offers a combination of high integrity glazing whilst incorporating a stainless steel frame and anti-ligature device specifically designed for challenging Mental Healthcare environments.
Beautifully engineered utilising the Vistamatic Integrated spindle / cam mechanism (PCT/GB2010/001871), the SUREview complies with the Department of Health environmental design principles for adult medium secure units. Depending on use, the panel is available in two robust thicknesses – 26mm (LSU/MSU) and 35mm (MSU/HSU) and all SUREview vision panels are offered with the unique Vistamatic Lifetime Warranty.
The SUREview vision panel is available in two standard sizes 404mm x 404mm square and 800mm x 250mm oblong and can be specified as 30min Fire rated or standard non fire rated.
The accompanying metal glazing bead is robust and durable, yet thanks to its range of finishes, never looks institutional. The improved edge detailing also creates a softer design that’s safer and reduces the opportunity for self-harm.
The SUREview uses a simple universal Lifeline key with soft-close features. This new gated key system ensures privacy and dignity for service users and is designed to limit the potential a service user has to block a key-way in an attempt to prevent clinical staff from operating the locks in a secure environment, whilst ensuring privacy and dignity for service users. Plus there’s just one key for both observations and anti-barricade access, making it simple, quick and easy for staff to use.
Colour and individual bespoke graphics can make the world of difference to a project be they of a novel or commercial nature and can play a part in creating an exciting or calming influence within an environment. Vistamatic® recognise the importance of this and enhancing the overall experience of patients, staff and visitors within mental health and dementia and pride themselves on their effective approach to interior design, helping to create an outstanding therapeutic space.
After working with several leading Architects in the field of Dementia and Mental Health design about incorporating art within a building’s design in order to improve the therapeutic environment, we began to look into ways of incorporating art into our vision panels. Following an extensive research and development process, we developed a remarkable solution which allows detailed digital images to be printed on to the vision panels.
Vistamatic® Anti-Ligature vision panels demonstrate innovation within their field and sets a precedent for the design of future environments, providing a number of benefits for end users, including:
- Respecting the modesty, privacy and dignity of patients and visitors
- Creating a welcoming and attractive environment that lifts the spirits of the end users
- Creating an inspirational sense of place and a therapeutic environment whilst addressing infection control, patient safety and security
A patient’s perception of internal perimeters is that of an obvious custodial boundary, something unmistakably institutional and a constant reminder that they are living in a secure environment. We realised that by adding art to our vision panels we could soften the physical appearance of the doors whilst significantly enhancing the internal patient environment.
Any image deemed appropriate can be used, be it specified by the healthcare provider, architect or end users themselves. If the latter option is selected it creates an opportunity to empower service users to take ownership of the building and indeed their internal environment.
